Adelaide Control Tower & Passenger Terminal - 1957

AD

A new airport for Adelaide at West Beach opened to regular services in 1955, taking over as the city's main airport from the earlier Parafield aerodrome. A new Passenger Terminal with integrated Control Tower, as was the fashion in those days, opened in 1957. Click here to see a photo of the building under construction.

The photos on this page show the main terminal area at Adelaide/West Beach in October of that year. For each of the wide photos below, the main Terminal/Tower building is also shown in more detail at the bottom of the page. The aircraft are, from left to right, a TAA Vickers Viscount, a Guinea Airways Douglas DC-3 and two ANA Douglas DC-6s. The large structure with the light coloured roof to the left in the upper photo and in the foreground of the lower image is the shelter for the Vickers Vimy G-EAOU.
